Where do I begin?! I am so excited to share our new kitchen! I believe that the kitchen is the heart of a home. It’s the most important space where family and friends gather to create beautiful memories, cook amazing meals, and sip fancy wine. Who am I kidding? Sure, it’s great for all of those things, but also, it is the place where I quickly whip up super simple dinners occasionally, and where half asleep I scramble each morning to make and pack the kids’ lunches. It’s where everyone goes to grab a quick bowl of cereal and it’s the science lab where my daughter mixes strange ingredients to make slime on a daily basis. Can you relate? Whether you are leisurely making fancy dinners in your kitchen, or running through it to grab something last minute, the kitchen is the most important space in the house. It’s where people gather and connect at the beginning and end of a busy day. Whether it’s for your daily lifestyle or when selling your home, a functional kitchen is so important. If it’s beautiful too, that’s even better!
With all of the previous homes that we have remodeled, I have never had the opportunity to choose new cabinets. We have always either kept the existing cabinets as-is or had them painted. In this house, the cabinets were original from the 90’s and really scuffed and scratched. We knew they were not salvageable and that we would need install new cabinetry. Yay! We also knew at first glance that we wanted to remove the hexagon soffit above the existing cabinets to raise the ceiling and add an extra row above the main cabinets. Yay again, I’ve always dreamed of that extra row! We had the amazing opportunity to partner with MasterBrand’s Aristokraft Cabinetry line to design our new kitchen. We worked with an incredible MasterBrand designer, who had so many great ideas for the space. We chose the Winstead shaker style doors in white and they are absolutely gorgeous! We added awesome features like a matching wood range hood, crown moulding, glass door fronts (on the top row), open shelving, pull-outs and more. The cabinets and drawers all have the “soft-close” feature, so no loud bang when shutting them, which is fabulous.
I can’t tell you how great it is to have brand new, fresh clean cabinets that have never been used. No weird sticky spots and stains, just clean and perfect! Let’s keep them that way, okay kids?
I know you all love before and after images, so here we go!
We should play one of those games where you list all of the differences between one photo and the next. The list would be really, really long. Ha!
Quite a difference, right? I cannot express how happy I am with how this dream kitchen turned out! From the beautiful and functional cabinetry to the gorgeous wood floors, to the backsplash tile (I’m obssessed), to the apron front stainless steel sink and chrome faucet, to the open shelving (a stylist’s dream), to the lighting and hardware, it’s just perfect. Let’s talk about more details…
In our past homes, if we have had a range hood, it has been stainless steel. When I saw that Aristokraft offers a wood hood that matches the cabinetry, I was all in. I was a bit nervous that if I went with an all white subway tile backsplash like our last house, it would blend in too much, so I chose this stunning patterned tile so the range hood would pop! This is the main focal point of the kitchen and really adds a custom look.
I love the tall, deep cabinets we did in the island. They are super spacious and give the island such a simple, clean design.
On the wall with the refrigerator, we did tall pantry cabinets with these awesome pullouts! I have so much storage in this kitchen, it’s so wonderful. I still have empty cabinets and drawers to fill, which means I can move more linens, tableware and props out of the TomKat closet and into the kitchen for easy access. Yes, please!
I love this wood cutlery divider that fits perfectly in the drawer. Much better than the plastic version I used to have!
You may have been wondering where our microwave is? We had it built into the back end of the island to hide it! Genius, right? The drawers around it are super functional.
Oh, oh open shelves! I’ve never had them before, but I have been in love with this trend for a long time! My husband was skeptical and felt like doing the open shelves wouldn’t give us enough upper cabinet space, but he trusted my judgement and I know I picked a winner. I am so glad we did this! I could style these shelves for days. (stay tuned for tips!)
We had the pleasure of partnering with Blanco to furnish our sinks and faucets throughout the house. This is the first apron front (farmhouse) sink that I have done, and again something I’ve been dreaming about. More details coming soon, but in the meantime, how gorgeous is this chrome Grace faucet?
If you follow me, you know this is my very favorite light fixture ever. So, I used it yet again. The first time was over the dining table at our vacation home, then in our last house over the kitchen table, and now over the island in this house! It’s such a winner. Every time.
For the first time, I purchased quite a few items for this house on Amazon. Who knew that they sell these darling black sconces? (and only $50 each!) I love them so much that I bought more for my master bathroom! Stay tuned for that reveal!
…and these black modern cabinet handles? These come in many sizes, so I ordered 3 different sizes depending on the cabinet height or drawer width.
I think the black fixtures and accessories really tie in with the black and white tile and pull it all together!
Soooo….. what do you think?
I hope you love the transformation as much as I do! Stay tuned for more details about styling open shelves, kitchen accessory details, and more room reveals… coming soon!

Thank you, Laura!!
You have impeccable taste! Beautiful in every way. That backsplash tile above the stove is a true winner!
Thank you, Melanie! What a kind compliment!! xoxo
beautiful as always! where are the black and white tiles from?
The backsplash tile is from Home Depot!
Wow….. just wow!!!! You knocked it out of the park!!!! This is perfection!!!!
Thank you, Amber!!
It’s gorgeous Kim! I love it!
Thanks, babe!
Absolutely beautiful! Best of luck in your new home.
Thank you, Donna!
Kim , it’s beautiful! Those old recessed kitchen ceilings can be a challenge and love how you brought it current. The cabinets look perfect as well as your choice of pretty tile above the stove. The skirt sink is also a favorite of mine. Who wouldn’t want to cook in this kitchen! You’ve done all the right touches from hardware to lighting to fixtutes. I now need you to come redo mine 🙂 excited to see the rest of the home!
Thank you, Kim! Yes, the ceiling was quite an issue, but we figured it out especially with the a/c vents, but we got it done and it’s SO much better! I’m so glad you like all of the details I chose!! xoxo
my goodness, your before pictures could be my “now” pictures, so you must know the anxiety i feel in that dark space i have. you’ve created a wonderful, welcoming gathering spot, as well as work area, that is just delightful. my husband & i have lived in 7 homes in 24 years, 4 of which have been white kitchens, and i miss them all. ice just about got him convinced to redo ours, but it will be down the road. since yours is was so similar, i’m definitely showing him the dramatic results. enjoy!
White kitchens are the best, right?! I hope I can help you convince him it’s time to update!
Kim, it is AMAZING!!! I cannot believe the transformation and all the white is swoon-worthy x
Thank you so much, Caley!! So glad you like it!
I love it all…..from that drool worthy tile backsplash, to the scones above the sink to the simple but beautiful cabinet hardware to the pullouts….oh the pullouts!!!!! Love the open shelving as well! How fun that will be to change out the items on the shelves during the different seasons or holidays. Great choices on everything Kim (of course)!!! I can’t wait to see the rest of the house…..you and Danny are quite the team!!!!!
Thank you so much, Tina! We are so happy with how it all turned out!! xoxo
I want the whole thing – every.last.detail.
Your list of talents never ends. Well done, my sweet friend. Xo
Thank you, dollface. Love you. xoxo
I’m obsessed! I may copy everything in our new house!???? Can you share your flooring and source? Thanks!
Feel free! Thank you for the sweet compliment! You can find all of the flooring details here: http://thetomkatstudio.com/2017/03/remodelchapter3/
seriously gorgeous Kim!! I love all the finishing details you choose!
Thanks, babe!
Absolutely gorgeous! Curious what type of stone you used for your counter tops? Love following all your endeavors!
Hi Annie!
We chose Quartz countertops! We did quartz in our last house and loved it. It is the closest “look” to marble without the maintenance! The style we went with is called Tipperary and it was from Arizona Tile.
I’m in love with everything you chose. And great choice on the tile backsplash and open shelving. I’m so excited to see it in person!!!
So very stunning. I’ll bet it makes you so happy walking in there!!
Question on the Eldridge pendant from Ballard, does it provide good task lighting or is it more ambient lighting?
I use regular bulbs, so it provides great light! I think Ballard shows it with Edison bulbs, which are much dimmer. Hope this helps!
Hola Que linda me encantó el contraste de los azulejos!
FELICITACIONES.
What did you use for your countertops? I’m remodeling right now and I LOVE what you have done to your kitchen. Please share!!!
We used Tipperary Quartz from Arizona Tile!
Kim I seriously have some major Kitchen envy girl. Did you use grey or a white paint for the walls in your house?
Thanks, babe!! For the walls throughout the house, we used Dunn Edwards Cloud (light gray). 🙂 Same as the last house!
Beautiful transformation- I love everything about your kitchen! I especially like how your before/after pictures were from the some angle and perspective to truly appreciate the change.
Thank you so much!
Do you remember the color of grout you used for subway tile in kitchen? Avalanche or white? Please let me know. Thank you!
I’m so sorry, Anita… I don’t remember!
Hi, beautiful kitchen!! Could you tell me if Aristokraft provided the panel detail on the end of the island, or was it custom made? Thank you!
Yes, Aristokraft provided the materials for the panel details on the island!
Thank you! One more question! It looks like you chose the regular white color for cabinets… it looks very bright and pretty in your photos, do you find in person that it looks stark or overly bright at all?
Not at all. I love light and bright and pure white is my favorite!
Hi Kim! Is your grout white w your subway? I’m going w a similar quartz counter and I want to do white subway but I’m worried the whites won’t match. Do you think it matters if the whites aren’t a perfect match?
Hi Ashley!
I think it’s okay if the white don’t match perfectly! I think it would be nearly impossible for them to be a perfect match! When in doubt, I always go with the whitest white.
Hi Kim! The very inspiring design of renovation in this blog and if you know I really love the combination of black and white as I feel free and fresh. Thank you for the good idea you shared in this article I appreciate this.
I absolutely looooooove your kitchen! It is perfect and it is my inspiration for my new house 🙂
I was wondering if all your cabinet pulls are the same size? And if it is the 5 inches?
Thank you!
Thanks for an informative blog. Really nice
Hi Kim,
I absolutely ❤️ your designs and always look forward to new blogs and “reveals!” I decided to use Dunn Edwards “Cloud” in my own home (going from old yellow to fresh gray!) 🙌🏻 The ceilings in my home aren’t as high as the ones in this home. Did you use Cloud on the ceilings too? Thanks for inspiring so many of us!
I love your choices. I lived in a shaded suburb so choosing white was already no question. We didn’t have any natural light. Its glossy finish helped bounce the artificial lighting. Plus, it really helped in creating a make-believe appearance of a larger kitchen.
Yes, I know you’ll be nervous especially when its time for cleaning. For me, I don’t let the dirt stay for too long. I’m a busy mom and I don’t really have the time for a deep cleaning routine. I used a rubber sponge cleaner because it lasts a long time. I used this eraser on absolutely everything. It easily helps lift up all the dirt and grime. It has these micro scrubbers that does its job on hard-to-reach areas.
Hi, we just purchased the same cabinets and yours look so awesome! I’m looking for black pull handles and saw your amazon link, but have no idea on sizes. Do you remember the size of the longer pulls on doors and the shorter pulls on the 3 tier draw cabinets? Thanks so much. Your kitchen looks beautiful.
Looks beautiful- you did a great job. I have been planning a renovation and was recently told I should start by picking my countertops?! so, when I went shopping, I was baffled to discover the natural stone selections looked horrible with my floor choice, which is similar to yours. Do you love the white quartz and is it annoying to keep it looking clean all the time?
Hi Julie! I LOVE white countertops! Quartz is easy to keep clean! I just use a wet dish rag.
I absolutely love your kitchen! It is perfect
