Thank you so much for all the wonderful feedback about my “Let It Snow” Christmas Tree for the Michael’s Dream Tree Challenge! If you missed the post last week, you can see all of the details here. Today, I am sharing the tutorial for making the Glittered Wood Letter Garland that I used on the tree. It is really easy and you can spell out anything your heart desires!
Here is what you will need from Michael’s:
3.25″ Wood Letters
White Craft Paint (Decoart Americana Snow White)
White Coarse Glitter – Crystal (Martha)
Glitter Glue (Martha)
Small Foam Brush
Small Paint Brush
Hot Glue Gun + Hot Glue Sticks
Twine from The TomKat Studio Shop
Step One: Use a foam brush to paint the letters white including the sides. Allow to dry.
Step Two: Apply glitter glue to painted letter using a small paintbrush.
Step Three: Generously sprinkle glitter onto letter. Shake off access. Apply more glitter glue and glitter to any missed areas.
Step Four: Use hot glue gun to apply glue to the backside of each letter and attach to the string of twine (across the top).
Pretty easy, right? Pretty + easy. 🙂
Let me know if you are going to make one and if you do, I would love for you to share it by tagging #tomkatstudio and #justaddmichaels!
Shopping this weekend?
I will also be sharing the tutorial for making these photo ornaments soon! (Update: Here are the instructions for the photo ornaments!)

Heading back to Michaels again today to see if they got the wood letters in yet…fingers crossed!
November 8th, 2013 at 11:30 am
I hope they got them in for you!
October 16th, 2014 at 9:27 am
I love this idea, but…. I’m going to use glittered chipboard letters. I’m afraid the wood letters might be too heavy for my tree.
November 8th, 2013 at 10:55 am
P.S. Ordering the TKS silver shimmer twine to use for my garland 🙂
November 8th, 2013 at 12:10 pm
Perfect! I can’t wait to use our shimmer twine for lots of projects this year!
November 8th, 2013 at 4:00 pm
Just went there, not in yet. ARGH!
November 12th, 2013 at 8:18 am
That is weird that some stores have them and some don’t! I’ll keep my eye out for you!
November 30th, 2013 at 6:33 pm
Remember michaels can order items in bulk. From one item to thousand. It takes two weeks. They cannot order seasonal items in bulk. But wooden letters are an all year round item.

try using glittered chipboard letters!
November 8th, 2013 at 11:48 am
Definitely making two. One for Feliz Navidad and another for Merry Christmas 🙂 Thanks for the DIY
November 8th, 2013 at 12:09 pm
Perfect!!
November 8th, 2013 at 12:04 pm
Thank you so much Kim! Would a thin satin ribbon also work instead of twine?
November 8th, 2013 at 12:09 pm
Hi Heidi! As long as it was super thin, I think it would. Thicker ribbon bunches and then the letters don’t hang right 🙂 Let me know how it goes!

Was the Pottery Barn travel tree your inspiration? Looks just like the Merry Christmas on that tree.
November 12th, 2013 at 8:27 am
I have a Pottery Barn Kids Easter banner in a similar font, but I’m not sure if I’ve seen that tree. Is it in this year’s catalog? If my tree looks like a Pottery Barn tree, that makes me happy!
November 10th, 2013 at 7:44 am
Your tree is beautiful as is everything you do! I cannot find the letters at Michaels either or online. I live in CA too. I did find some at JoAnn’s which I’ve used for other projects but I do like like font on the ones from Michaels. Any tips on finding them would be appreciated. Inspired by this to a Thanksgiving banner in fall colors with Martha’s glitter. Happy Holidays!
November 12th, 2013 at 8:28 am
Hi Cathy! A Thanksgiving version would be gorgeous! I am sorry you are having trouble finding the letters. If I find some, I will stock up and let you guys know!
November 10th, 2013 at 9:51 am
Yay, thank you for the tutorial. I may use my Silhouette to several of the same letters and layer them for thickness. (That way I have a wider choice of fonts). Brilliant idea and tutorial – many thanks again 🙂
November 12th, 2013 at 8:23 am
Great idea, Janet!
November 11th, 2013 at 7:54 am
Ok, so I found the letters yay!!!!2 hrs away …
Where did you get the icicle garland on the tree???
November 12th, 2013 at 8:23 am
Hi Michelle! So glad you found them! The icicle garland is also from Michaels!
November 11th, 2013 at 6:01 pm
Kim this is awesome! I am having a difficult time finding the letters that you used in your project. Is there any possibility that you have the 12 digit UPC # that would have been listed on the item’s bar code or on your receipt next to the item’s description? I appreciate any help you can give me! Thanks so much!
November 12th, 2013 at 8:22 am
Hi Alex! Here is one of the SKUs (Letter A): 886946294587
Let me know if you need all of them!
November 11th, 2013 at 7:13 pm
Love the simplicity yet so stunning! I’ve been to Michaels, have to go to another location for some of the letters. And got the owl at a great discount…so cute. Is the bow at the top of the tree silver?
November 12th, 2013 at 8:29 am
Hi Emily! So glad you found the materials and the cute owl! The bow is silver! (also from Michaels)

Hi Kim I absolutely adore your christmas tree! I’m planning on doing the merry christmas garland unfortunately the michaels near me does not have the wood letters. Is it possible to place the SKUs for each letter so I can place an order? Their system isn’t compatible with placing orders without the SKU. I know it’s a hassle but great christmas tree I love it!

Where in Michaels are those letters located?
December 4th, 2013 at 7:41 am
HI Andrea! They were in the same aisle with all of the wood letters. I’ve been told that not all the Michael’s stores are carrying this style. 🙁
December 6th, 2013 at 8:30 am
Any tips for attaching the garland to the tree? Yours looks so seamless, but I’m having troubles!

Hi… Wanted you to know you inspired me to recreate the “Let It Snow” themed tree. I added a few different elements… Bird houses, drift wood tress, etc. Also, I made the glittered frame ornaments and wood letter “Merry Christmas” garland. I’m in love with how it turned out! Please visit my Facebook page, Sweet Ava Kate to see pictures. Thanks for sharing and inspiring me!
Merry Christmas!
