Hello friends! I am so excited to introduce you to Jill Thomas of Pure Design Interiors! Jill will be contributing regularly to our blog with her latest design projects and ideas. Jill and I have known each other for years and you might recognize her from a past venture, Modern Cupcake. Jill has been in the interior design industry for over 8 years, working with both local clients here in Phoenix and now expanding virtually. I was having some issues figuring out how to finish Kate’s room, so I called in Jill for a consult. I am so excited about the plans we came up with and I can’t wait to share it once it’s completed. In the meantime, enjoy Jill’s first post which is a peek into her own son’s big boy bedroom…
As a family grows, creating new living spaces for the children is something most parents can relate to. Our little one transitioned into his very own big boy room, which was once my office. The color blue and sharks were at the top of his wish list. When designing children’s rooms I do take into account the child’s requests, but ultimately it’s my job as an interior designer to translate their wish list into something beautifully unexpected and functional.
So what have I done thus far? The walls received a fresh coat of paint. I chose a soft blue gray to act as a neutral backdrop and create an overall calming effect. My little one selected his shark sheet set from Pottery Barn Kids. I paired the sheet set with a vibrant lime green and white striped duvet, also from PBK.
My son + I also worked on creating bold graphic artwork together. While he painted, I created a free hand shark silhouette out of white copy paper. Once his painting was dry, I taped the shark cutout onto his artwork and mounted it in a white matte frame.
Well, now that he’s off to school I have some quiet time to complete his bedroom. Stay tuned for an “After-School Reveal” and see how I transformed my office into a modern yet playful, shark-enthusiast big boy room.

Can’t WAIT to see the big reveal for Kate’s room and to see Jill’s creative work. We are almost ready to move so I will be decorating my Kate’s room in a pink ballerina design. Very woo-woo with her crystal chandelier and beautiful ballet prints from RH Baby and Child 🙂
Your Kate’s room is going to be beautiful! I’ve been struggling with Kate’s room (hence why it isn’t finished at all) and now after meeting with Jill and chatting with my little miss herself, we may go a different direction. I can’t wait to see your Kate’s room…send me photos!
Thank you so much, Tina! It sounds like your Kate is going to have quite the little girl’s room. What fun!
My son has this bedding in his room! How fun to hear how it was designed.

Transitioning into a “big-boy” room is an important part of childhood. You are making a space that he can seek refuge, read a book, play dinosaurs vs. cars, and just be a kid. He’s going to love being your “creative partner”. I should know, i’m his dad. We love you very much….keep being our inspiration!
Hello Rob! Thank you for leaving such a sweet comment for your darling wife. She’s amazing!
Why am I not surprised that the “big boy” room sounds amazing and looks that way so far, too? Because it’s designed by Jill! That girl could turn a napkin into a work of art. Can’t wait to see the final product!
True! True! So happy to have Jill as part of the TomKat team!

This design post is fantastic! Love the vibrant colors and simplistic design. It still screams BOY without being over designed or “kitschy”. You are a rare talent, Jill!!
